Dana Plane crash
Relations of victims of last Sunday’s Dana Plane crash in Iju, Lagos, which killed the 153 passengers and crew aboard yesterday expressed displeasure over the delay in the release of the corpses of their loved ones because of long DNA and autopsy processes.
The relations on sighting the Minister of Health Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu and the Lagos State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Jide Idris and other government officials at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), went wild and started shouting at the officials demanding the release of the corpses to them.
Some of the relations said they could no longer bear the delay and were charged, shouting on top of their voices.
The Minister then inspected the morgues to see some of the corpses and thereafter proceeded to the site of the crash at Iju/Ishaga area, where he sympathised with the families of the people in the buildings on which the plane crashed and also examined the extent of the damage.
Thereafter, the minister in company with the commissioner, Chief Medical Directors (CMDs) of the federal government owned hospitals in Lagos and other government officials proceeded to the Lagos Mainland Hospital, Victoria Island, where he also inspected the 97 unidentifiable bodies at the hospital’s mortuary.
The minister who later addressed the press said the federal government would come in where necessary to expedite the DNA/autopsy processes to reduce the time it takes the pathologists to carry out the process on each victim.
He noted that the government was aware that the relatives were under emotional and psychological trauma, which requires both spiritual and psychological counselling, but appealed to the aggrieved relations to remain calm and allow the pathologists to do a thorough job for proper identification.
