Governor Chibuike Amaechi
The Rivers State Government has said it would revive the General Hospitals in the state to make the secondary referral health facilities effective, particularly those living in rural areas.
Governor Chibuike Amaechi said this, Friday, at the opening of the 2013 maternal, newborn and child health week at Ayama-Abua, headquarters of Abua/Odual Local Government Area of the state.
Amaechi, who was represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Sampson Parker, said the state government, in collaboration with Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) had started work on the Omelego-Odual General Hospital.
He further said work would soon start at the Ahoada General Hospital, in Ahoada-East Local Government Area to serve as a secondary referral facility for the people of Abua, for the meantime.
The governor condemned a situation where the people of Abua/Odual LGA prefer to patronise traditional midwives and spiritualists instead of accessing government healthcare facilities located in all nooks and crannies of the area.
Chairman of the State Primary Health Management Board, Dr. Uriah Etawo, said there had been a decline in infant mortality in the state, attributing the development to the efforts of the state government.
Etawo stated that the maternal, newborn and child health week was significant as people sometimes tend to forget that there was a crucial link between the health of the child and that of the mother.
Chairman of Abua/Odual Local Government Area, Hon. Udi Odum, thanked the Amaechi-led administration for bringing health care facilities closer to the people.
Odum, who was represented by the Supervisor for Works, Hon. Superintendent Adoki, however appealed to the state government to look into the dilapidating state of secondary health facilities in the area.
